Robert Harper was born in Scotland and grew up in Glasgow and on the island of Islay. He acquired a camera at the age of seven and at fourteen sold his first photograph — of The Who in concert.
He later moved to London to study for a degree in Photography at the University of the Arts, followed by an apprenticeship including two years at the Condé Nast studios assisting such top names as David Bailey, Helmut Newton and Lester Bookbinder. He went on to freelance assisting and, in due course, established his own studio.
Robert’s particular skills in the photography of fashion and beauty led to ongoing shoots for leading titles, and he was a regular contributor to Elle and The Telegraph Magazine for over fifteen years. Advertising assignments included clients as varied as De Beers, Boots, Heinz, Diageo, Harrods, Selfridges, the BBC, CBS Records and Montblanc.

Across thirty-five years, commissions took Harper from superyachts on the Côte d’Azur to supermodels in Manhattan; from Renaissance frescoes in Venice to geysers in Iceland. Towards the end of his career, he broadened his subject areas further to include high-end marine photography.
